With Cristiano Ronaldo, Rafael Leão, and Bruno Fernandes in scintillating form, Portugal rarely struggle to score, but their open approach continues to leave gaps defensively. Against a resilient Irish side, another high-scoring win looks very possible.
Republic of Ireland Showing Signs of Progress
Heimir Hallgrímsson’s Republic of Ireland remain winless in their last four matches, but performances have shown attacking improvement. Despite recent defeats to Armenia (2-1) and Hungary (2-0), the Boys in Green have scored in five of their last six fixtures and look more confident in possession.
That run includes goals against Serbia, Slovakia, and Sweden, respectable opposition for a side in transition. The defensive record, however, remains concerning. Still, their ability to grab a goal against shaky defences gives them a chance of making this competitive.

Portugal have won their last five meetings with Ireland, scoring 14 goals and conceding just three.
The most recent clash ended 3-0 in Lisbon, with goals from Fernandes and Ronaldo. Ireland’s last result in this fixture came in 2014 — a 5-1 friendly defeat in New Jersey.
Given both teams’ current trends, a repeat of Portugal’s attacking dominance with a goal conceded looks entirely plausible.
